Servus!!
This week, we had quite a few member appointments – we are trying a lot harder to get to know the people in the ward. But one of these appointments stood out from all the rest. It was with this lovely old lady that lives about 2 hours away and has the most amazing positive outlook on life. She has stage four cancer and many other health problems, but she loves to cook so she invited us over to teach us a few of her favorite cheap, fast, and easy recipes.
While there, we made a creamy noodle dish and fried/battered cheesy toast, she also served us each 3 slices of cake! She then sent us home with all the leftovers (3 large yogurt tubs of the noodles and half a cake) plus some teriyaki sauce and Asian noodles, molasses, extra frosting, some grieß (kinda porridge), and honey. We didn’t have to cook again for the rest of the week! She also sent us away with the recipes for what we made and more as well as plenty of sage advice, about cooking and life.
She said full fat milk was the secret to her youthful skin, you can use potatoes to de-salt an overly salted dish, our husbands should have a sense of humor and a good work ethic, and, lastly, we should always keep our shoulders back, and our chins up.
For her, keeping a straight back is at this point for medical reasons (she can’t put too much pressure on her lower spine), but that we should always have the confidence to do the same – and it’s true! We are children of a King, our Heavenly Father who loves us. We have the potential to become like Him and we should never let our self worth be lowered. We matter to Him, and that is reason enough to lift our chins and look to heaven.
On a slightly sadder note, we visited Dachau last preparation day, a concentration camp from World War 2. Hearing the stories of survivors and standing where so many people died was a somber experience, but worth having. It’s important to remember those who have suffered so much, and it makes me all the more grateful for the plan of happiness and justice that we have from God and for our Savior who makes it all possible.
I hope you all have an amazing week!
Liebe Grüße, Sister Tripp
