Week 27

Fixing Roofs

Posted by Kezia Tripp on Tuesday, August 9, 2022

Hallo liebe Familie und Freunde!!

This has been quite a week, and a lot of good lessons have been learned. The story I would like to share with you all today is about roofs.

So, for the past month our church building has been surrounded by scaffolding due to some repairs being done on the roof – I am not exactly sure of what sort. This is all fine and well, albeit a little annoying at times and it blocks the view. But it was not all fine and well yesterday.

Yesterday morning my comp and get to the church building around 10.20 for our district council meeting just as it is starting to sprinkle. We were glad we made it to the building just then since we did not have any rain protection with us. We get inside and wait for the other missionaries in our district to show up so we can begin. During our opening song, one of the Elders points out some water dripping near the back of the chapel – at this point it is pouring rain. A leak here and there isn’t too strange, so we wipe it up and put a bowl under it. Then we notice all the other leaks. It is dripping water down one entire half of the chapel. We can’t stop it all, so we instead switch to protection, covering the piano and other electrical equipment with big trash bags to try and prevent damage to them. We couldn’t find any tape downstairs to use to secure the bags, so we went upstairs to where I knew we could find some. We make it to the top of the stairs and we immediately can tell that we have a big problem. The floor is entirely soaked and in some classrooms it is basically just raining inside. We finished what we were doing and basically just started praying – it was too late to undo all the damage that had been done. Through this time, construction workers were frantically trying to fix the roof and members were informed, but it was still too late. And here is where we learn an important lesson:

You have to fix the roof before the rain comes. That means fixing it while the sun is shining.

You cannot wait for the rain to come before you fix your own roof. You must prepare yourself now, while you still can, even if it seems not as necessary since the weather may be nice. This is absolutely important for spiritual matter as well. We are taught by Amulek in Alma 34:32-33

32 For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors. 33 And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed.

It is so important for us to reflect now on our lives and how we can improve ourselves, how we can fix our own roofs, since when the pouring rain begins to come there will be little we can do to prevent the damage done – at least not on our own. Jesus Christ is always there to help pull us back up when we fall. He will help us patch up holes and mop up floor. It is only through Him that we can make our house complete and recover from any damages done.

On a higher note, last P-day we hiked Schneeberg again, and although I didn’t make it all the way to the top, we made it higher than I did last time. Progress! It is also already halfway through the transfer and I have made it 6 months into my mission. Time has flown, but I have absolutely loved it.

I hope you all have an amazing week!
